MPavilion 2016 architect Bijoy Jain will discuss the concept of ‘lore’ and how it relates to his internationally renowned architectural practice, Studio Mumbai, in a free public lecture. Presented in partnership with MPavilion, the Wheeler Centre and the Melbourne School of Design, where the lecture will occur on July 26.
Jain will explore the way in which traditions and knowledge are passed on from person to person, usually by word of mouth, and how this process is a guiding principle that underpins all Studio Mumbai projects.
At Studio Mumbai, Jain leads a team of skilled artisans and craftspeople to create buildings based on human competences, local building techniques, materials and an ingenuity arising from limited resources. Projects are realised through an extensive process of model making, material studies, sketches, and careful consideration of the surrounding environment.
An acclaimed ethical and sustainable design expert, Jain was awarded the Grande Medaille d’Or from the Academie D’Architecture in Paris (2014), and his most celebrated projects include Copper House 11, Palmyra House, Ahmedabad House and Saat Rasta.
For London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, he carved out the living space occupied by a typical Indian family of eight in the exhibition Architects Build Small Spaces. And for the National Museum of Art in Tokyo, he created three open-air wooden structures referencing Japanese postwar ‘do-it-yourself’ huts, created for public use while the museum was closed for renovations. In typical Studio Mumbai fashion, the buildings were designed and pre-fabricated in Mumbai, disassembled and shipped to Japan, and then installed by several of the Studio Mumbai team whilst demonstrating their techniques for the public.
For the third annual MPavilion – the temporary structure housed for four months every year in Melbourne’s historic Queen Victoria Gardens – Jain plans to create an “egalitarian space that celebrates the idea of ground and sky, east, west, north and south, and to find an angle of repose within that.
“I want the building to be a symbol of the elemental nature of communal structures – a place of engagement, and a space to discover the essentials of the world and of oneself,” he said. “What’s interesting about the site is that the garden’s edges are formed by the streets and roads – in some ways it is a non-place. MPavilion relocates this space and makes it a place of meaning.”
MPavilion’s founder Naomi Milgrom AO was excited to comment: “An extraordinary architect – Bijoy Jain will showcase a radically different approach to design and construction. His lecture will look at the civic role of architecture and the importance of empathy and care at every stage of the design and building process.”
MPavilion is a unique annual architecture commission and design event conceived and created by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation. Every year, one new temporary pavilion, designed by a leading international architect, is erected in Melbourne’s historic Queen Victoria Gardens. From October through February, the MPavilion becomes a design and cultural hub and home to a series of talks, workshops, performances and installations. It is then moved to a permanent new home within Melbourne’s CBD, creating an ongoing legacy in Melbourne’s increasingly sophisticated architectural landscape.
Previous architects include Sean Godsell, whose 2014 design, inspired by Australia’s outback sheds and verandas, now stands in the gardens of the Hellenic Museum. And Amanda Levete of the British firm AL_A, who in 2015 used technology from the aerospace industry to create a forest canopy of translucent petals. Levete’s pavilion will soon be relocated to a park in Collins Street, Docklands.
